“Matlock” boss reveals Matty’s secret history with her suspects

Matlock delivered a huge twist in the final moments of the series premiere that upended viewers’ expectations of the reboot. After Madeleine “Matty” Matlock’s (Kathy Bates) big secret is revealed to the audience, each episode will let viewers in on the secret as she goes undercover to search for evidence of corruption at her new place of work, the prestigious Jacobson Moore law firm.

MatlockThe first episode will re-air on CBS on Thursday, October 10th at 9/8c, and episode 2 will premiere on Thursday, October 17th at 9/8c. When the series returns, we’ll learn more about Matty’s backstory and how her family’s elaborate plan came to fruition.

One of the key revelations in Episode 1 was that Matty believes one of the company’s bosses – Julian Sr. (Beau Bridges), Julian Jr. (Jason Ritter), or Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) – was hiding documents he received would have had opioids taken off the market 10 years earlier. Had this happened, Matty’s daughter (the mother of her grandson, whom she is now raising with her husband Edwin) and so many others might still be alive.

Matty will spend the season trying to figure out which of her three suspects is guilty, but keeping them secret during the investigation will be a constant obstacle, according to showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman, who confirms to TV Insider that Matty isn’t wrong when they suspect these three lawyers.

The “how and when and with whom and under what circumstances” may change throughout the season, she says, “but the person who took the missing document, that person will be identified and is one of those three.”

Does Matty really have the overview? “Maybe,” Urman says. “She’s assuming what the Redditor said, that you’re figuring out where this is coming from. It starts on this axis and will continue to go down, that’s what I’m saying. The question of who helped and who is involved may expand, but we are keeping these three suspects because one of them will be the culprit.”

The showrunner also reveals that “at some point later this year you’ll see that Matty, Olympia and Julian’s paths have crossed before and it was that little moment that really influenced Matty’s decision to move forward with the plan. “

The plan will be fraught with dangers that often threaten to expose Matty. “You can’t be perfect on a mission like this,” Urman explains. “There will be chaos and these are exciting moments in the series as she struggles to hide and evade suspicion. And there are some, I don’t want to give too many spoilers, but there are suspicions that will get in her way at some point.”
