Ange Postecoglou reveals the mystery surrounding Sergio Reguilon’s appearance

Mystery solved! It’s a slow news day at Tottenham Hotspur-land as the squad spent most of the day flying to Hungary and settling in ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League game against Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

But the big mystery of the day was what the hell was Sergio Reguilon doing on the plane? It caused a lot of ruffled feathers (if I may mix a metaphor? May I!) from stupid people on the internet who misinterpreted the UEFA regulations and claimed he had replaced Destiny Udogie in Spurs’ Europa League team (side note : He can’t do that), and preemptively reacted angrily to Ange Postecoglou on behalf of Djed Spence.

Well, it turns out that according to Big Ange, Reggie was there for a good reason – he’s a traffic cone. Postecoglou explained in his press conference that Reggie traveled to Hungary along with a few unnamed academy kids to fill out the training list and ensure they had enough bodies. And that was all.

“He’s a Spurs player, mate. I mean, we have a training session, so it’s a trade-off that we need 20 players to train, we do that minus one for match day. There was no point in bringing someone like Radu [Dragusin, suspended] or a few people who got injured because we don’t get back until late Thursday.

“We brought a few young people with us. The academy played last night and we didn’t want to disrupt that, but we brought a few young guys and Reguilon with us to make sure our training was really good today. As for the squad, Destiny hasn’t traveled since the weekend. The injury isn’t anything special, but again there was no point in bringing him in if he wasn’t going to play. Radu is suspended and Sonny is back in London to rehabilitate, but the rest of the team and the young players have arrived.”

So it’s not a conspiracy and everyone can put their purple and yellow glasses back in the box. Reggie is just a good teammate, and if he can’t (or won’t) play, he can at least help coach the guys who will.

Elsewhere, Ange said there were no new concerns in the squad and that Dominic Solanke was fit and ready to play against Ferencvaros, but that did not mean he would. I’m pretty sure I saw BIG WILLY LANKS in the video of Spurs boarding the plane that they had previously posted on social media, and although both Cuti Romero and Micky van de Ven made the trip to Hungary, Ange said it was very likely that 18-year-old Archie Gray will play somewhere in the back line… even at centre-back.

“No, I think Archie can play centre-back. He’s obviously played full-back, midfielder and probably left-back too. He’s a pretty versatile player and that’s one of the reasons why we were really pleased to bring him to the club. He absorbs information well and with Radu suspended and Destiny out, we’ll definitely need him in the background. We have different ways to use him, but I would like to use him in any of those areas.”

Ferencvaros lost their first game in the Europa League group stage, losing 2-1 at Anderlecht on September 25. They are currently leading the Hungarian league, which is not surprising as they have won the league for the last five seasons. The game starts at 12:45pm ET / 5:45pm BST and will be broadcast on TNT 1 in the UK. As usual, it will stream on Paramount+ in the US.
