Inmate dies at Cleveland County Detention Center, cause of death unknown

The Cleveland County Board of Commissioners received notification that an inmate had died at the Cleveland County Detention Center.

According to Cleveland County, the news came from Sheriff Chris Amason.

The currently unnamed inmate died today, October 3rd.

The cause of death was not announced at this time.

“The commissioners are saddened by the loss of life at the detention center and while they recognize that the inmate population tends to be at higher risk than the general population, they believe any avoidable loss of life is unacceptable,” Cleveland County said Board of Commissioners in a statement.

This opinion was also expressed in a separate press release earlier this year.

On September 19, Cleveland County Commissioners released a statement regarding the number of inmate deaths at the Cleveland County Detention Center.

In the statement, Cleveland County commissioners said they had approved a contract with SIMCO Correctional Consulting, LLC, a company that specializes in correctional facility operations and security protocols.

SIMCO is tasked with investigating these deaths.

The September 19 statement read:

To address this growing concern, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) took action earlier this year and issued a request for proposals to: Identify and analyze the root causes of prison inmate deaths; develop actionable recommendations to prevent future deaths; and improve overall safety and health protocols at the prison.
