New Hanover County sends more personnel to western NC

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Local crews are being sent over to western North Carolina to help address the deadly impacts of Hurricane Helene in Buncombe County.

Six people from New Hanover County Emergency Management, the Sheriff’s Office, and the City of Wilmington were deployed to support the BC Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Then on Thursday, seven more New Hanover County personnel will be sent to join the efforts.

“In addition to the personnel deployments, New Hanover County 911 has been serving as a backup communications center for Buncombe County 911 since September 27. This vital support has ensured continued emergency response services for the affected areas,” a New Hanover County announcement states.

Along with these, a team from Taskforce 11 (including NHCFR and Wilmington Fire Department members) was deployed to replace the 13 firefighters who have been conducting water rescues in Buncombe County. They have been on the ground since Sept. 26.

“For those in the community looking to provide support, monetary donations remain the most effective way to assist with recovery efforts. Those interested in contributing are encouraged to do so through verified services such as the state’s official Hurricane Helene Donation Page. Faith-based organizations or communities interested in donating supplies can contact Larry Marks with Volunteer Organizations Assisting in Disasters, who is coordinating with North Carolina Emergency Management. He can be reached at [email protected] or 919-271-8885,” the announcement continues.
