Renderings unveiled for a mixed-use project at 1640 5th Street in Santa Monica

An application submitted to the city of Santa Monica in September Sheds new light on restructuring plans the properties surrounding the western terminus of the E line.

Lincoln Property CompanyOwner of the Comma Building at 1640 5th Street has proposed construction of an eight-story building with 132 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments above underground parking for 132 vehicles.

Project requirements include density bonus incentives, allowing for a larger structure than zoning rules otherwise allow. In return, 15 of the proposed apartments would be made available for rent as affordable housing middle, low and very low income levels.

KFA architecture is designing 1640 5th Street, which is depicted in the plans as a modern podium building with amenities at the podium and roof levels. These spaces include a courtyard and a pool terrace.

A development plan which first came to light about a year ago, would eventually result in the project site and adjacent parcels being combined into a single development that would emerge A total of up to 570 apartments next to the Downtown Santa Monica train station. AMCAL’s proposed project would include around 140 affordable units.

The project would follow a handful of large developments currently taking shape near the E Line station. A 280-unit complex is now being built on the former site of a Vons supermarket on Lincoln Boulevard.
