Kamala Harris says “We need to legalize cannabis for adults.”

For the first time since her Democratic presidential run, Vice President Kamala Harris (D) voiced her opinion on cannabis reforms, reiterating her belief in legalizing cannabis for adults in a podcast interview published Monday.

“I just think we’re at a point where we need to understand that we need to legalize it and stop criminalizing this behavior,” Harris told the hosts of “All the Smoke,” a sports podcast.

“I just feel strongly that people shouldn’t go to prison for smoking weed. And we know historically what that meant and who went to prison.” — Harris, in interview

Despite her early career as a prosecutor responsible for the incarceration of many cannabis offenders, Harris initially supported full legalization of cannabis when she was a U.S. Senator for California.

Harris’ position on cannabis policy goes further than that of President Joe Biden, who initiated the rulemaking process this year to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III under federal law.

Meanwhile, the vice president’s opponent in this year’s presidential race, former President Donald Trump (R), announced a significant change in his opinion on cannabis policy last month, saying he supports federal relisting of cannabis to Schedule III and giving cannabis companies access to it Banking services. Trump also said he plans to vote “yes” on Amendment 3, Florida’s amendment legalizing cannabis for adults, in the November election.

Notably, recent polls suggest that voters in several key battleground states strongly support the legalization of medical and adult-use cannabis. Survey respondents also said they support giving the industry access to traditional banking.
